Each time he discovered a new eccentricity of his country, my great American friend Josh Ewing, seldom surprised, most often entertained and sometimes appalled, cried: Only in America! This meant: Only in America is it possible to see this! (for better or worse). The American society always in motion, always in discovery of a new border, promotes the bursting and exceptional. It is what for Europeans represents American excess, a touch of madness which at the same time follows and redefines the modern world. Even in its most conservative forms, this society includes unusual elements of the fantastic and strange. This book contains pictures spanning a period of more than thirty-five years. These are pictures made in America rather than pictures of America, pictures of my America, unusual America which is at the same time banal, completely mad, and more than reasonable. Only in America!!
