The narrative of the Bretton Woods agreement (1944) shows how the US shaped the new gold exchange standard so as to serve their interests. In the 1960s, the US started breaking the agreement. On 15 August 1971, the dollar was declared inconvertible. This was the end of the gold exchange standard and the beginning of the dollar standard.
