Unity and convergence of international trade union action in the 20th century

"Over the 20th century trade unionism was confronted with many challenges whose stakes stretched beyond national borders. While the labour movement had been from its inception conscious of the importance of the international dimension, was it equipped to face them? Caught amid the ambivalences of the 'age of extremes' and economic upheavals, the trade unionist movement remained in search of unity and international convergence. Yet its fervour was often constrained by opposing rationales. The present work offers a range of insights, from across the 20th century, into the successes and failures of rapprochements, accomplished or merely envisaged, aimed at strengthening the position of salaried workers.
